During her time with us, Kristen will walk through the ways God's heart for justice and righteousness emerges over the course of the biblical story, from Genesis to Revelation, and how throughout the biblical story God calls His people to join Him in seeking justice and righteousness in this world. She will also explore what this means for us and for our callings here and now. How can we respond to this justice calling right where we are, from within the callings God has given us to our families, churches, communities, and workplaces? Lastly, she will suggest some Christian practices - such as worship, lament, and Sabbath - that God can use to sustain us as we respond to the calling of Jesus to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matt. 6:33).  Along the way there will be time for discussion and reflection on how this connects to your life, callings, and communities.

Speaker

Kristen Deede Johnson is Associate Professor of Theology and Christian Formation at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan. In partnership with International Justice Mission, she and co-author Bethany Hanke Hoang recently wrote the award-winning The Justice Calling: Where Passion Meets Perseverance (Brazos Press, 2016).  Kristen's scholarship focuses on theology, culture, and political theory and her other publications include Theology, Political Theory, and Pluralism: Beyond Tolerance and Difference (Cambridge University Press, 2007). Her husband, Tryg, serves as the Dean of the Chapel at Hope College and together they have two school-age children.
