Sharing Life Together: Shalom and the Public Good

  • 123 S 17th St Philadelphia, PA, 19103 | (map)

Our very own Dr. Joel Garver is a philosophy professor at La Salle University. In this class, Dr. Garver will help us converse with Christian figures from the ancient church through early modernity on “politics,” understood here not primarily as order or power, but as the practice of shaping shared life together toward justice and flourishing. What do these earlier Christians have to say about cultivating shalom with regard to the common good, human dignity, tolerance, and wealth?

Our list of topics includes:
1. General introduction on the common good, law, and society (Jan 13)

2. Human dignity as a universal that transcends place or tribe (Jan 20)

3. Liberty of conscience and the civic virtue of toleration (Jan 27)

4. Wealth, property, and the universal destination of goods (Feb 3)

Please register for the class to receive access to hand-outs and communication about the class.
